Revelation Film Fest, July 3-13, [Perth]

It’s happening and on us! The 11th installment of Rev is here with a new venue, new program director and event activity that extends the festival beyond the wonderful screens at Mt Lawley’s beautiful Astor Cinema and into galleries and clubs.

The 2008 event contains over 100 films drawn from the four corners of the globe and features live musical performances in the cinema, a micro-cinema and machinima showcase at the Spectrum Gallery (also Mt Lawley), a bar and lounge throughout the event at the Astor, guest presentations, industry based seminars and open forums designed to engage the local film community in its cultural funding strategic direction.

It brings to Perth national and international guests from the production, screen culture and broadcast sectors as well as providing some of the finest independent work on show in Australia curated with vision and purpose.

Although I don’t have the dosh to attend most of my prefered events, I may make an appearance at a few. Here are my personal picks:

Craig Baldwin should be a familiar name to devotees and fans of the modern  underground film and truly independent visionary cinema. Craig Baldwin is a Revelation favourite, and his previous movies include the plunderphonic documentary Sonic Outlaws and avant-garde conspiratorial science fiction  epic Tribulation 99, both are rightly revered as classics of radical filmmaking.

Mock Up On Mu is Baldwin’s latest feature film, finished only a month before this year’s festival. Mock Up On Mu uses real events and rumours as a starting point for its narrative. Telling the story of occult California, the history of rocket science, contemporary politics, conspiracy, and counter conspiracy Craig Baldwin takes these apparently wild and disparate themes and mixes them into his own modern crypto-science fiction mythology.

The Life and Death of Hunter S. Thompson

Under the slogan “when the going gets weird, the weird turn pro” Thompson’s books took the reader with the author into the less familiar side of America, while reinventing the very role of the journalist.

Tin Can Man

Richard Dawkins – Beware the Believers [MV]

This is a admittedly well-produced spoof of evolutionary biologist and renowned atheist Richard Dawkins, casting him has a gangsta rapper and a braggart, arrogantly pushing forward his beliefs with the refrain “He’s smarter than you he’s got a science degree!” announced over and over (ad nauseum). It’s a good piece of fun I suppose, though the problem which strikes me as being quite cogent in this entire science/evolution divide is the general public’s or even anyone from the ID (intelligent design) camp’s impression that the scientific community is rife with arrogant and condescending people, which in my mind is complete hogwash. If they say they think science can “explain eveything”, it is not them individually who claim to know everything & to be able to know more (than anybodye else). It’s the fact that scientific principles are the most trustworthy source to dervive knowledge about the world around us. If people believe things based a solely sentiment and a complete lack of evidence, I don’t think it is right to call them “holier than thou” if you will, if they find this absurd sometimes. Everything we know about the world and are able to apply without fail, has been found using reason.

CRADLE OF FILTH: New Audio Interview With DANI FILTH

Headbanger’s Blog recently talked with CRADLE OF FILTH frontman Dani “Filth” Davey about the sound of the British extreme metal band’s forthcoming album. The as-yet-untitled CD is a concept record about a legendary serial killer from the 15th Century, Gilles De Rais, a French nobleman who fought alongside Joan of Arc and accumulated great wealth before becoming a satanist, sexual deviant and a murderer. Davey also spoke about the song he wrote for Dario Argento’s new horror film “Mother of Tears”, the horror-themed video he wants to do for the new record and the long-awaited history book he wrote with Gavin Baddeley, “Gospel of Filth: A Bible of Decadence and Darkness”, which he hopes will be out by Halloween — around the time the new record drops.
